The history of the Secondary Specialized Music School at St.Petersburg
Conservatory named after N.A.Rimsky-Korsakov is by now more than sixty
years old. In 1934 an experimental group for musically gifted children
was first organized at the Conservatory. Later it was transformed into
a Secondary Specialized Music School, where professional training in
music is combined with secondary school education.
Currently the Secondary Specialized Music School at St.Petersburg Conservatory
named after N.A.Rimsky-Korsakov is one of the most prestigious professional
establishments in Russia, where the performers of all kinds can get
both good education and thorough training. A constellation of the school's
brilliant graduates who have gained a World-Wide recognition, has strengthened
its position not only in Russia, but also abroad.
At different times such well-known by now musicians as conductors Yuri
Temirkanov, Mariss Yansons, Yuri Simonov, Vasily Sinaisky; violin players
Boris Gutnikov, Vladimir Spivakov, Mikhail Gantvarg; violoncello players
Daniil Shafran, Anatoly Nikitin, Boris Pergamentshchikov; pianists Grigory
Sokolov, Ekaterina Murina, Natalia Trull, composers Sergei Slonimsky,
Valery Gavrilin.
There is a large symphonic orchestra at the school which is also over
sixty years old. This considerable age of the team itself is combined
with the young age of the musicians who play in it. The participants
of the orchestra change every year - senior students graduate from school
and their places are then taken by their junior successors. The continuity
of generations and high level of performance art are the principal traditions
that determine the orchestra's creative image.
The orchestra has been at different times conducted by such famous
graduates as Yuri Temirkanov and Mariss Yansons.
The teaching staff is represented by the leading St.Petersburg musicians.
Not only school's own personnel but also the best professors of the
Conservatory teach here.
The list of the laureates of the most important international competitions
becomes longer every year, as the names of young St.Petersburg musicians
who go to this school are added to it. Young soloists and chamber ensembles
that consist of the students of the school regularly give concerts on
the best stages of St.Petersburg, Russia and Europe.
